How does reflexology work?
There are points which are stimulated on the feet and hands that correspond to organs and musculoskeletal systems as well as glands and the lymph pathways which end in the feet and hands. By some estimates there are over 7200 nerve endings in the feet alone. As we are all bio-energetic beings, reflexology works at clearing the energy pathways which are also worked on in such sciences as acupuncture.
Why should I do it? What are the benefits?
Increased circulation and elimination of toxins are just two. Restoration of the body’s equilibrium with a marked reduction of tension, anxiety and even depression are all shown in my studies to date. And your feet will love you!
Is there any scientific proof that reflexology works?
Yes, there are clinical studies that prove its effectiveness as well as some articles indicating the same.
How many sessions should I have and how often?
2 sessions within 2 weeks followed by regular sessions at monthly intervals works well for maintenance. If there is a specific condition, please allow 6 sessions for full effect with the last 4 at a maximum of 2 week intervals. Please note that people vary in their needs. I have had marked success in as little as 1 session, and also with 3 sessions scheduled at monthly intervals. You are the best judge of what is right for you.
Does reflexology hurt?
It is possible if there are major issues to resolve there may be discomfort for the first 1 or 2 sessions. However, this is rare even in long term and normally painful conditions such as arthritis. I have now had four clients who had reflexology before coming to me and who stated they were reluctant to have it again even though it worked as it hurt so much. They were all happy to find that reflexology does not have to hurt to work. This practitioner is by all accounts very gentle. Reflexology should be very relaxing. All therapists should check in with you to be sure you are okay or comfortable. Deep breathing on painful areas helps to release tension and pain levels drop. You are in ‘control’ in all your sessions.
Is reflexology okay to do when the client is pregnant?
Absolutely. Accommodations are made of course, such as the client sitting in a chair not lying down. In fact it can even be done during labour to ease delivery.
Is reflexology okay to do when the client is nursing?
Certainly. Reflexology has been known and used to increase breast milk supply as this really helps a stressed mom relax for ‘let down’, especially when she is going back to work again.
Can reflexology help in conception?
Yes, it can help but as with all therapies, not in one session. It will help you relax (most important – as stress is a big block), but can help to clear one of any other ‘energy’ blocks in their body and bring balance to them. It is an excellent addition to acupuncture, which is also known to help with this.
Does it work with children?
Yes. I find very young children need shorter sessions and recommend full sessions once they are over 8. It helps with so much that medications are typically prescribed for, such as allergies, colds, ear infections and more, without side effects. It is very good in addition to these medications.
Can reflexology help with depression or anxiety?
Absolutely! Many of us can experience the ‘feel good’ chemicals during a session as has been studied in depth at the Touch Research Institute in Florida. Endorphins are released in reflexology affecting the whole body system.
Is there anything else you would like me to know?
Please come with dry hands or feet, as hands or feet that have cream on them are slippery and I cannot work as well on them. Also, it is important to drink more water following a session. I recommend at least 1 more glass daily for 3 days. It is also recommended that you inform your doctor that you are having regular sessions as medications may need to be adjusted.
